Replace front shock struts

I'm a fair do-it-yourselfer. I have a 2004 SE. I had it all jacked up and removed the 3 nuts on top and the one big bolt and nut at bottom of the strut assembly; but the spring pushes the strut down and I couldn't get it out. You also need to pull the three bolts on the top straight down to clear the mounting holes. Do I have to drop the lower control arm down to allow the strut assembly to drop clear? I had a pair of spring compressors all ready to install to safely remove the strut and put the new one in the spring but the whole thing HAS to be out of the wheel well for enough clearance.
Hope for any input

Unbolt the shocks on both sides before trying to remove them. The stabilizer bar keeps the A arm from dropping down far enough if you try to remove the shock assembly one side at a time.
You could also remove the bar link on one side to remove the shock.

undo the top of the spindle so the lower a arm will drop low enough after you undo the stabalizer bar end links and move them outta the way.

I replaced mine 2 weeks ago. I removed mine one side at a time. I did not have to bust the ball joint's loose to get them out.
Unbolt the end links on both sides of the sway bar, where they bolt to the lower control arm, and push it down out of the way. Unbolt the top and bottom of the strut.
Then use a pry bar, the lug wrench will work in a pinch, to pop the bottom of the strut out.

Do Not have the jack under the control arm and place a jack stand under the frame.
